BIRD WALK AND RESOURCES FAIR Register View Cart

Get ready to spread your wings at The Great Malden Outdoors Birding event, where nature meets community in celebration of Disability Pride! Alongside the chirping birds and scenic trail, don’t miss the vibrant Resource Fair featuring amazing organizations like Molina Healthcare, Boston Center for Independent Living, My Ombudsman, and many more.

This free event features several guided birding options all along a flat and paved portion of the Northern Strand Bike Trail leading to the Rumney Marsh for a 1 mile round trip. You can select from joining Nature Man Mike’s tour from 8am to 10am or join blind birding guide and Malden resident, Jerry Berrier, for a birding by ear tour from 9am to 11am, and we’re offering a Big Sit birding event by the Boston Birding Festival for the length of the program. During your registration for the event, if you are interested in taking one of the guided tours, please select one. No birding equipment or experience is required to participate.

Details for each Birding Activity:

Trail description, this section of Northern Strand Trail is flat, paved, and smooth. The trail is 8 to 10 feet wide and used for pedestrian traffic only. There are two street crossings at which volunteers will be assisting each tour or individuals to cross the street. Public seating will be available with benches at Linden Square and at the Rumney Marsh. ADA accessible restrooms and hand washing stations will be available at the Linden Square parking lot and resources fair. The parking lot has handicapped spaces and the lot isn’t very busy on weekend mornings so plenty of spaces will be available. The location is also MBTA accessible via the Lynn St @ Beach St bus stop.

For those taking the birding tour with Nature Man Mike, this will be a 1 mile roundtrip along the trail. Participants will have two spots to rest, at the start in Linden Square and at the Rumney Marsh viewing area, which is a half mile from the start. There are two shaded sections along the trail but the majority of the trail is in direct sunlight. Participants should be able to utilize their own or loaner binoculars provided by the guide as this tour will be birding by sight and sound.

For those taking the birding by ear tour with Jerry Berrier, this will be a 1 mile round trip along the trail. Participants will have two spots to rest, at the start in Linden Square and at the Rumney Marsh viewing area, which is a half mile from the start. There are two shaded sections along the trail but the majority of the trail is in direct sunlight. Participants will not need to use binoculars; however, if they’d like to bring their own binoculars, they are welcome to as this will be a birding by sound tour.

For those who either do not want to sign up in advance or do not want to make the 1 mile round trip, the Big Sit by Boston Birding Festival will be a great option as it’s a stationary birding event. Participants will have two options to enjoy The Big Sit, they can park at the end of Blodgett St. in Revere (use 19 Jordan St Revere MA 02151 for best GPS address) and transition from the paved street over about 20 feet of crushed stone onto the paved Northern Strand Trail. The total journey from the end of Blodgett st to the Big Sit area in Rumney Marsh is less than 200 feet in total. An EZ Up shade tent will be provided for those who need it at the Big Sit area. Participants are welcome to bring their own chairs if desired but two public benches will be on site. Participants can make use of the binoculars or scopes provided by the guide and are welcome to bring their own.
